About PMG

Peter Maddison-Greenwell is often affectionately known as ‘PMG’. An obvious abbreviation of an otherwise long but impressive name. As Peter says “the only time it is an encumbrance is when he has to write it on a cheque”.

Peter or PMG has ridden since he was just nine years old. He has been in various training equestrian principles with horses of all breeds and types for most principles, since his teenage years. Now, nearly many years later he is focused on all things “dressage” and truly believes it is the foundation of all riding.

Peter’s passion for Spanish horses started as a young man but it was not until 1983 his passion was realised when he and his partner Danielle Lawniczak bought their first horse together. Chico, seen in Pesade (below left) is sadly no longer with us. Chico, an Hispano x Arabe was the start of the journey for El Caballo de España and the true culture and tradition that drove PMG and Danielle to search for a deeper understanding of “dressage in the true sense”.

In 1984 Peter joined The British Association for the Purebred Spanish Horse. Then in it's infancy. Peter served as ordinary committee member for a number of years before becoming Vice President and finally President for seven years before resigning in 2001 to dedicate more time to this rapidly developing business.

PMG has been for some years an International Dressage Trainer of world-wide repute, working with all levels dressage training from the very novice to a good number of competitive dressage riders and trainers, some he has taken to Grand Prix.

He runs regular dressage training clinics throughout Great Britain as well as teaching in America, Germany, Spain and Dubai with more invitations from Poland, South Africa, Australia and France.

The emphasis for Peter is on the dressage training of both the horse and the rider and is based on many years as an instructor. Firstly as a young man giving the riding lesson in an equitation school and schooling horses. Later in the dressage training of horses for himself and his many clients. It is the honest opinion that far to many dressage trainers focus on schooling horses only, where PMG and his team truly believe that the dressage rider must learn how to ride through “a balanced and effective seat that is driven by an intelligent, disciplined and informed mind” .

His beliefs and principles put Peter Maddison-Greenwell amongst the worlds top trainers in his field.

His philosophy and personality, combined with a sound depth of knowledge and riding ability makes him absolutely unique in the equestrian world as one of the few people who crosses over with ease from performer to trainer in all aspects of dressage.

He is equally happy helping the classical, the competition dressage rider and the working equitation rider as well as assisting in the training and choreography for performers of High School, Doma Vaquera and Garrocha, Quadrilles and the many variety of historical and theatrical shows. Whatever the work Peter is insistent the horses are happy, strong and correct in their work.

Peter does not hide the fact that he has never competed in British Dressage. His work is very highly regarded amongst competitors who seek his help in all aspects of their training. He truly believes in honesty above commercial gain. He genuinely understands the effect of the riders position as well as their physical influence on the horses and their way of working.

His approach to the many problems of riders and trainers from all walks of life as diverse as ‘Natural Horsemanship’ to “High School’, from ‘Working Equitation’ to ‘Advanced Competitive Dressage’ is one of calm analysis based on a vast and varied experience. His ability to analyse a problem and logically think through to a solution has helped so many. His communication skills both in his teaching and his Lectures has brought knowledge to an ever increasing world-wide client list and audience.

Peter has featured in and written many articles as well as his own book “Living and Working with the Horse of Spain”. This is the first book of it kind in the English language and is published in UK, USA and Spain, Being published in Spain in itself is an honour and an accolade for PMG.
